Kristian Vigenin organizes a conference on digital solutions to support patients in Europe

An event titled “Equal Access to Medicines in Europe: The Role of Digital Solutions” was held at the European Parliament, organized by MEP Kristian Vigenin and the Online Medicines Ordering and Delivery Alliance (OnHOME Alliance). The event brought together leading politicians, representatives of patient organizations and digital health experts to discuss ways to overcome inequalities in access to medicines through innovation and digital tools.

In his speech, MEP Kristian Vigenin emphasized the key role of digitalization in improving healthcare systems and access to medicines. “Digital solutions can make healthcare more accessible, faster, and more efficient for patients across Europe. Despite progress in some countries, many citizens still face barriers to access medicines, especially in remote and rural areas, where the lack of pharmacies and medical professionals is a serious issue.” ,he stated.

“In January 2025, nearly 390 prescription medicines were unavailable in pharmacies in Bulgaria and more than 15 municipalities had no pharmacy at all, leaving 50,000 people without direct access to medication.”, he pointed out.

According to the Bulgarian MEP, such issues are not just national but affect the entire EU. “The COVID-19 crisis showed us how important telemedicine and e-prescriptions are. These tools must be developed sustainably rather than remain temporary solutions.”, he added.

Vigenin also referred to a legislative study he commissioned in 2023 as Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, which examined the regulatory framework for online pharmacies in various countries. “There are challenges to the full implementation of digital services in healthcare, but we must work to solve them rather than just find excuses for why improvements cannot be made.”, concluded Vigenin.
