class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s5\">&#8220;<\/span><span class=\"s5\">Longer life must go hand in hand with a dignified quality of life for every European citizen.<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> That is why the conversation about <\/span><span class=\"s5\">care for elderly patients with rare diseases, and in particular <\/span><span class=\"s5\">with <\/span><span class=\"s5\">primary <\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u200b<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.&#8221;<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> This was stated in <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Brussels<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> by the Bulgarian MEP from <\/span><span class=\"s5\">the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in <\/span><span class=\"s5\">the European Parliament<\/span><span class=\"s5\">Kristian Vigenin during the discussion <\/span><span class=\"s5\">on one of the most underestimated challenges facing health systems,<\/span><span class=\"s5\">  &#8211;  <\/span><span class=\"s5\">care for elderly patients with rare diseases. <\/span><span class=\"s5\">In his view, what these patients need is <\/span><span class=\"s5\">a comprehensive approach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s5\">The MEP, together with the International Patient Organisation for Primary Immunodeficiencies (IPOPI) and his colleagues from different political groups, brought together representatives of the institutions, the medical community and patient organisations.<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u200b <\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u200b<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u200b<\/span><span class=\"s5\">a<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> \u200b <\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u200b<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> \u200b <\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u200b <\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u200b <\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u200b<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u200b<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u200b<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> &#8220;Behind <\/span><span class=\"s5\">every health policy stand real human lives&#8221;<\/span><span class=\"s5\">, the MEP told them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>New challenges for health systems<\/h2><p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s5\">Vigenin focused on the new challenges arising from advances in medicine.<\/span> <span class=\"s5\">&#8220;Now <\/span><span class=\"s5\">people with these conditions live longer. But this raises new questions: it is not enough simply to extend life <\/span><span class=\"s5\">, <\/span><span class=\"s5\">we have to guarantee its quality<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> throughout<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> the whole <\/span><span class=\"s5\">life cycle.&#8221;<\/span><span class=\"s5\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s5\">In his words,<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> health <\/span><span class=\"s5\">systems<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> <\/span><span class=\"s5\">are currently not prepared to meet these needs. &#8220;Health<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> systems remain too focused on hospital treatment instead of the integrated care that elderly patients actually need,&#8221; he explained. Vigenin<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> drew attention<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> to the particularly <\/span><span class=\"s5\">worrying situation<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> <\/span><span class=\"s5\">in Bulgaria: &#8220;In<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> our country access<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> to treatment is often delayed, and care for elderly patients remains a challenge.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The need for systemic change<\/h2><p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s5\">The MEP believes it is high time for systemic<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> change: &#8220;It<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> is<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> clear that we have to move from short-term solutions to long-term, comprehensive care<\/span><span class=\"s5\">. Let us build<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> better coordination, support for families and real recognition of the role of informal carers.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s5\">Vigenin noted that the topic is<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> not a<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> niche one,<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> but a question of the future of an ageing<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> Europe.<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> That is why, in his view, rare diseases <\/span><span class=\"s5\">need to be a focus<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> and to be included<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> in<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> key European policies such as the Rare Diseases Plan and the Intergenerational<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> Fairness<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> Strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s5\">As rapporteur on the topic in the European Parliament, Vigenin said he will continue working actively<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> so that these priorities receive real<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> support. &#8220;We cannot allow &#8216;rare&#8217; to mean &#8216;forgotten&#8217;,&#8221;<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> he warned in
