As the socialists rapporteur, Kristian Vigenin won approval on two legislative acts

The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament adopted two legislative acts on which MEP Kristian Vigenin is the socialists rapporteur.

New rules for cross-border data protection complaints

The MEPs approved the agreement reached in the negotiations with the Council of the EU and the European Commission on new rules for the cross-border enforcement of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Kristian Vigenin, as rapporteur for the Group of Socialists and Democrats, managed to secure:

  • clear procedures and deadlines for handling cross-border complaints;
  • faster and more predictable investigations, 12 to 15 months;
  • mechanisms for the early resolution of disputes between national authorities.

He gave the example of Facebook, with Meta registered in Ireland but still having to act within the set deadlines when complaints come in. After the final vote in the plenary and the formal approval of the ministers in the Council, the new rules will become directly applicable across the whole EU.

The cooperation agreement

The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament also approved the Cooperation Agreement between the EU and Brazil through Europol and the Federal Police of Brazil. This partnership creates a legal framework for exchanging data in the fight against organised crime, drug and human trafficking, terrorism and cybercrime. The agreement is an example of effective international cooperation, guaranteeing a high level of personal data protection and respect for the fundamental rights of citizens in full accordance with the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. The final vote in the plenary is scheduled for September.
