Kristian Vigenin asked the Agriculture Commissioner for a review of the protocols for dealing with outbreaks of animal disease

The head of the Delegation of the Bulgarian Socialists in the European Parliament Kristian Vigenin asked the Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen for a review of the protocols for dealing with outbreaks of significant diseases in animals and birds. He put questions during the discussion in the European Parliament of the Vision for Agriculture and Food proposed by the European Commission.

„The mass destruction of birds and animals always has a serious effect on the economy and on farms, as well as on nature, when they are buried and incinerated. Practice proves that, in the case of peste des petits ruminants, this is not necessary. The infection is not lethal and this is being proved in the two outbreaks in Bulgaria“, the MEP argued.

The Vision for Agriculture and Food

Kristian Vigenin noted that the document on the development of agriculture is thorough and covers all the main problems, but he also identified gaps: the problem of infectious diseases in animals. „Do you intend to provide financial support for scientific research targeting the most significant diseases, whether through effective vaccines or through successful treatment and medicines?“, asked the head of the Delegation of the Bulgarian Socialists in the European Parliament.

The European Commission presented a Vision for Agriculture and Food, placing an emphasis on close cooperation between institutions, farmers, food chain operators and civil society at local and regional level. The document aims to increase the competitiveness and attractiveness of the food and beverage sector. It sets out the steps for developing the sector and introducing innovation.
