Kristian Vigenin sharply criticised the European Commission over the GMO authorisations

During a plenary debate in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, the head of the Delegation of the Bulgarian Socialists in the EP Kristian Vigenin expressed serious concern about the European Commission’s continuing practice of approving genetically modified organisms (GMOs), despite repeated objections from the European Parliament.

„The European Parliament has rejected almost 50 GMO authorisations, having expressed well-founded concerns about the impact of GMOs on biodiversity, food safety and environmental sustainability“, pointed out Vigenin. Nevertheless, the Commission continues to issue authorisations, often without a qualified majority and against the will of the Parliament and of a divided Council.

The risks of GMOs

He noted that the risks associated with GMOs are not hypothetical, but are linked to scientific uncertainty and long-term concerns. They include loss of biodiversity through monocultures, harm to pollinators and growing dependence on herbicides and resistant crops.

„These authorisations serve mainly the commercial interests of large, predominantly American corporations, and not those of European farmers or consumers“, Vigenin said. He firmly stressed that the fight for a sustainable agricultural policy based on science, responsibility and democratic legitimacy will continue, and that the resistance to GMOs will remain consistent.
