Vigenin: North Macedonia must win the support of Bulgarian citizens

The MEP commented on EU enlargement, relations with North Macedonia and the need for a clear European strategy

“If the Republic of North Macedonia wants to become a member of the European Union, it is not enough for its representatives to tour European capitals and look for pathways in the European Parliament. They have to win the support of Bulgarian citizens and should not underestimate this issue.” This was stated by Bulgarian MEP Kristian Vigenin from the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats on BNT’s podcast “#Balkans”.

The attitudes of Bulgarian citizens

According to the MEP, the results of a survey he commissioned from the polling agency Myara show that Bulgarian citizens support EU enlargement in principle, but their attitudes towards individual candidate countries differ. Positive attitudes prevail, except towards North Macedonia and, above all, Ukraine, where attitudes are more negative.

Relations between Bulgaria and North Macedonia

Vigenin pointed out that in recent years relations between Bulgaria and North Macedonia have not calmed down and normalised, but have moved in the opposite direction. In his view, Skopje needs to make an effort to change the way the country is perceived in Bulgaria.

“From now on, their main task should be to create a different and more positive image of their country here in Bulgaria. We can solve this problem together if they fulfil their commitments,” the MEP stressed.

He noted that Bulgarian citizens’ attitude to enlargement is more nuanced and shows maturity. In his words, they distinguish between their general attitude towards a neighbouring country and their assessment of whether it is ready for EU membership.

EU policy on the war in Ukraine

Vigenin also commented on EU policy on the war in Ukraine. In his view, Bulgaria should not block common decisions on financial and military aid, because such an approach would lead to self-isolation. At the same time, our country can push for more political and diplomatic efforts.

“The European Union still has no clear plan for the end of the war and for what comes after it. The debate is no longer about whether to talk to the Kremlin, but when and who should do it,” Vigenin said.

Ukraine’s future EU membership

He called for a more realistic discussion on Ukraine’s future EU membership as well. “Strong political messages are important, but when we talk about accession, there must also be answers to the concrete questions,” the MEP said.

According to Vigenin, Bulgaria cannot play a mediating role on its own, but as an EU member it can push for more political and diplomatic efforts and for a clear European strategy for the end of the war and the period after it.
