Vigenin: On the “Greenland” issue reason and dialogue have to prevail

Vigenin: On the "Greenland" issue reason and dialogue have to prevail

“Reason and dialogue have to prevail on the Greenland case, despite the tension created by the United States’ insistence on acquiring the territory.” This was stated by Bulgarian MEP Kristian Vigenin from the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament in an interview with BG on Air. In his words the very fact that a conversation like this is taking place between allies creates tension, because NATO’s role is to guarantee security and stability, not to generate conflicts inside the Alliance. Vigenin stressed that setting up a joint working group between the USA, Greenland and Denmark is a clear sign that a political solution is being sought through negotiations, rather than through quick or unilateral action.

The MEP expressed his conviction that it will not come to military escalation and that the options discussed will rather be ones linked to dialogue and concrete arrangements, including in the field of security. “Many things that until recently looked unthinkable are already happening, which is why it is extremely important to approach topics like these carefully,” Vigenin pointed out.

The role of the European Union

Kristian Vigenin also drew attention to the role of the European Union, recalling that the EU treaties provide for an obligation of mutual assistance between member states when one of them feels threatened and asks for support. At the same time he stressed that the European Union has no army of its own and that the idea of a military conflict between the EU and the United States is absurd.

The Mercosur agreement

Vigenin specified that on the Mercosur topic the Bulgarian delegation of Socialists in the European Parliament has not yet worked out a final position and that talks and analysis are under way. He specified that it will be aligned with the official position and the decisions of the BSP leadership. “For us it is important that our position takes account of the national priorities and the expectations of Bulgarian citizens,” he pointed out.

“The Bulgarian government supported the agreement. It creates opportunities, but also risks, which is why the decisions have to be well thought through,” Vigenin stressed. He noted that there are both potentially winning and vulnerable sectors, which calls for a balanced approach and clear safeguard mechanisms.

In conclusion Kristian Vigenin stressed that both in geopolitical crises and in large trade agreements, the European Union and Bulgaria have to act with reason, transparency and clear protection of the public interest.
