Vigenin: Uzbekistan is showing the will and ability to reform

The MEP supported the Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between the EU and Uzbekistan

“The Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between the EU and Uzbekistan is an important step in strengthening the European Union’s long-term engagement in Central Asia.” This was stated by Bulgarian MEP Kristian Vigenin from the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament during the plenary debate on the subject in Strasbourg. He pointed out that, amid global uncertainty, closer cooperation between the EU and the countries of Central Asia is extremely important for both sides.

Uzbekistan as an EU partner

“Uzbekistan is becoming an increasingly valuable partner in terms of connectivity, diversification of energy supplies, critical raw materials and regional stability,” Vigenin stressed. He noted that the country still faces challenges regarding political pluralism, media freedom and the protection of fundamental rights. “That is exactly why continued dialogue is so important,” he said.

Support for reforms

“Constructive engagement gives the European Union the tools to support positive change in the long term. Uzbekistan has already shown both the will and the capacity to reform,” the MEP pointed out. In his view, the agreement will create new opportunities for economic growth, social progress and poverty reduction in the country. He added that the Group of the Socialists and Democrats supports the agreement as a solid basis for a balanced and forward-looking partnership between the EU and Uzbekistan.

In conclusion, Kristian Vigenin wished Uzbekistan success in its own language.
