Kristian Vigenin committed to stricter control of homeopathic products

The MEP Kristian Vigenin held a meeting with representatives of the Bulgarian Association of Importers and Manufacturers of Homeopathic Medicinal Products (BAMHPMP) Dr. Percian Bukov and Dr. Nonna Petrova, on their initiative. The main topic of the discussion was the growing need for clear regulation and effective control over the production and distribution of homeopathic products at European level.

The reason for the meeting is the ongoing negotiations between the European Parliament and the Council of the EU on pharmaceutical legislation, according to which homeopathic remedies could be removed from the register of medicinal products. Dr. Bukov expressed concern that such a measure could lead to a lack of effective supervision of these products, which in his opinion poses risks to public health, especially in countries like Bulgaria, which is among the leaders in Europe in the use of homeopathic preparations.

Quality and control of homeopathic products

For her part, Dr. Nonna Petrova stressed the importance of quality control and professional prescribing of homeopathic remedies by doctors. The representatives of the association also focused on the potential of homeopathy to reduce the overuse of antibiotics, a topic that remains a subject of scientific and medical debate.

Kristian Vigenin thanked his interlocutors for the information provided and said that he would look into the details of the proposal and its potential consequences. He stressed that his priority as a legislator is to create policies that ensure the safety of citizens, especially in the area of health.

The MEP expressed the opinion that homeopathic products should not remain out of the sight of the regulatory authorities and stressed the importance of a scientifically based approach when deciding on their regulation.

During the meeting the parties agreed to maintain a dialogue on the issue and to hold another meeting after concrete steps are taken at European level.
