Bulgarian MEP from the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament Kristian Vigenin met in Brussels the Bulgarian athletes Viktor and Vyara from Special Olympics, the organisation that for decades has given people with intellectual disabilities the chance to develop their sporting skills, to feel part of a community and to make their dreams come true.

The mission of Special Olympics

Special Olympics is a global movement that covers thousands of athletes around the world. Their mission is extremely important, to overcome barriers through sport, to encourage people and to show that the strength of the human spirit has no limits, that faith and effort can beat restrictions. Although the movement is known above all for its World Games, held every two years, the organisation also provides support for its athletes and their families, training and health checks.

Kristian Vigenin said during the conversation that the meeting with the Bulgarian athletes from Special Olympics carries the symbolism of one of the messages of sport, that it is not only competition but also a way to be accepted, to share and to believe in yourself. “Sport creates communities that encourage our development, often beyond the abilities we suspect we have,” Kristian Vigenin said to Vyara and Viktor.
