Kristian Vigenin: There can be no political trading with the rights of Bulgarians in North Macedonia

“The dramas around the report on the progress of the Republic of North Macedonia towards accession to the European Union were an active exercise that was wrecked by Prime Minister Mickoski himself. It became clear that he himself does not want his country to enter the European Union. This is the view of more and more people. Mickoski succeeded in one thing, namely in using his comments to divert attention from a basic commitment of North Macedonia, the inclusion of Bulgarians in the Constitution. And this is not some kind of pressure on our part. This is a normal commitment that was made and that has to be met.” This was stated by the head of the Delegation of Bulgarian Socialists in the European Parliament Kristian Vigenin on Bulgaria On Air television. He noted that the negotiations can officially start the very day after the Constitution is changed: “The citizens of the Republic of North Macedonia have to understand that it is Mickoski and Siljanovska who are stopping them, not anyone else. But this whole discussion was useful, because it gave us the occasion to explain the Bulgarian positions on the case even better and for even more people here to understand what the current government in the Republic of North Macedonia is like.”

Transparency in drafting the reports

The MEP emphasised that in future the reports have to be drawn up openly and transparently, not without consulting the national representatives. “There certainly has to be a check. Reports cannot be made in the dark. In the European Parliament everything needs to be open, on the table. Some secret arrangements between rapporteurs cannot lead to what happened,” he added.

Kristian Vigenin pointed out that human rights and civil liberties are a question that cannot be an element of political trading: “We cannot close our eyes for the sake of somehow keeping the Republic of North Macedonia on a European course, because there are such comments too.” He added that human rights and civil liberties are a core value for the EU and no compromises with them should be allowed.
