Kristian Vigenin to students in Popovo: The rights of European citizens are protected as nowhere else

The MEP talked with the mayor of the municipality Lyudmil Veselinov and the regional governor of Targovishte Yoan Peev

“The rights of European citizens are protected, because only together and at European Union level can we take on the global companies and the technology giants. The rules created to protect personal data guarantee that it will not be misused in the name of bigger profits. The EU also created the first rules in the world that restrict the use of artificial intelligence in certain areas and guarantee that people will not become an appendage of machines.” This was stated by the head of the Delegation of Bulgarian Socialists in the European Parliament Kristian Vigenin to students who are European Parliament ambassadors from the Hristo Botev vocational school in Popovo. He also explained the intentions to make social networks publish the code of their algorithms and remove the addictive elements from them, while strengthening the protection of underage users. “No country can do this on its own,” Vigenin stressed. The head of the Bulgarian delegation in the EP talked about his work in the European Parliament, the reports he works on and the initiatives he takes. He also recalled some of the gains Bulgaria has made as part of the European Union, which include the possibility for young people to travel freely, to study and to work in every EU member state.

During his visit Kristian Vigenin met the mayor of Popovo Lyudmil Veselinov and the deputy mayor Yordanka Georgieva. He talked with them about the projects the municipality plans to carry out with European and national funds. They also discussed the expectations of local government for the EU budget for the next seven-year period, where the priorities of the socialists are keeping cohesion policy, especially when it comes to investment in national and local infrastructure, strengthening social programmes, continuing support for the Common Agricultural Policy and more funds for healthcare.

Vigenin also met socialists from Popovo and the neighbouring municipalities, with whom he discussed the development of BSP and its participation in the governing of the country. He also answered questions about Bulgaria entering the eurozone and the fears being stirred up in that connection.

Vigenin visit to the region ended with a tour of the innovative history museum of Popovo and a meeting with the regional governor of Targovishte Yoan Peev, with whom they discussed the main problems in the region whose solution requires state support.
