Vigenin with concrete results for more effective protection of personal data

European citizens have been given new ways to protect their personal data more effectively. At its last session the European Parliament adopted a new regulation which clarifies how the GDPR is applied in practice, the “Regulation laying down additional procedural rules relating to the enforcement of Regulation (EU) 2016/679”.

As rapporteur on behalf of the Group of Socialists and Democrats, Bulgarian MEP Kristian Vigenin worked actively so that the new rules make the protection of personal data clearer, more transparent and more consistent across the whole EU. This is particularly important in cases that concern more than one country, something that is becoming more and more frequent in our digital reality.

What the new rules mean in practice

Kristian Vigenin explained what this means in practice: “Clearer and identical rules are being created for lodging complaints, investigations and resolving disputes between data protection authorities. Citizens are being given better access to information on how their cases are handled. Stronger protection of personal data and a level playing field for the businesses that process it are being ensured.”

The MEP emphasised that our data now moves freely across borders, and that is why it is crucial to have a pan-European approach rather than 27 different procedures. He noted that the new regulation guarantees that all Europeans will enjoy the same protection wherever they are, and that cross-border cases will be resolved faster and more effectively.
