The BSP, United Left with a commitment to more funds for people of short stature and better access to medical services
Budget funding for people of short stature in Bulgaria needs to be increased. The subsidy has not been updated since 2019. This problem was raised by representatives of the national organisation Little Bulgarian People at a meeting with the head of the Delegation of the Bulgarian Socialists in the EP Kristian Vigenin and the MPs from the parliamentary group of the BSP, United Left Nina Dimitrova and Bilyana Ivanova, who are members of the social committee in parliament. They also raised the question of providing opportunities for diagnosis, rehabilitation and prevention, especially for babies born with skeletal dysplasia.
Kristian Vigenin, who is consistently committed to solving the problems of people with skeletal dysplasia, assured them that he would make every effort to improve living conditions and access to medical care. „I will help Bulgarian doctors to be trained so that they can care for people of short stature and their specific needs for medical help. I undertake to initiate conversations with Bulgarian politicians so that the state subsidy for people of short stature is increased“, the head of the Delegation of the Bulgarian Socialists in the EP emphasised.
The MPs Nina Dimitrova and Bilyana Ivanova pointed out that social care for vulnerable groups is a priority in their work and that they will prompt special attention in order to convince the other parties in parliament as well that the funds for people of short stature should be increased. They intend to raise the question of additional social services for this group of people in the next state budget.
The chair of Little Bulgarian People Svetoslav Chernev raised another important question, the social stigma towards this group.
Kristian Vigenin, Nina Dimitrova and Bilyana Ivanova undertook to set an example with consistent support for people with skeletal dysplasia. Vigenin intends to organise campaigns for the social acceptance of these people, as well as for real policies that will provide an accessible environment for them.
