Vigenin: Changes to the personal data protection legislation should not be made because of outside pressure

“Changes to the European personal data protection legislation should not be dictated by outside pressure or short-term interests. The GDPR is a main pillar of European digital sovereignty. Weakening it would be a step back for the trust of citizens and for the position of the EU as a global leader in protecting privacy.” This was stated by the head of the Delegation of Bulgarian Socialists in the European Parliament Kristian Vigenin during the closed discussion within the Annual Meeting of the Transatlantic Consumer Dialogue (TACD) on the topic “The future of privacy and the GDPR”.

The topic of personal data protection is among the priorities in the work of the MEP in the EP.

The proposal to simplify the General Data Protection Regulation

Together with the participants in the discussion, Vigenin discussed the new European Commission proposal for the so-called simplification of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the potential risks such a reform carries for the digital rights of European citizens, as well as for the regulatory autonomy of the EU.

“I am glad I had the opportunity to exchange ideas with experts from both sides of the Atlantic, as well as with representatives of the European Commission, academia and civil society. Only through dialogue can we find the right balance between reducing the administrative burden for businesses and guaranteeing the protection of citizens rights in the digital age,” Kristian Vigenin summed up the conversations he took part in.
