Vigenin: The European Biotechnology Act is key for the future of health and life sciences in the EU

“The European Parliament has given a strong start to the discussions on the European Biotechnology Act, a major initiative of the European Commission aimed at the future of healthcare, life sciences and the strategic autonomy of the European Union,” said Bulgarian MEP Kristian Vigenin, from the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats.

In the first hours after the presentation of the Act in the European Parliament, a first discussion took place with the participation of the European Alliance for Biotechnology and Life Sciences, industry and academia representatives, the Danish Minister for European Affairs, Marie Beer, and the Commissioner responsible, Oliver Varhei.

In Vigenin’s words, the European Biotechnology Act aims Europe not only to create excellent science, but also to successfully translate it into real results for society – production and jobs, faster access for patients to innovative therapies, strategic biotechnology projects in the public interest, better funding and a more flexible regulatory framework. Responsible use of artificial intelligence and clear biosafety rules are also important elements of the initiative.

The MEP stressed that with the presentation of the Act the real dialogue on key issues such as funding, geographical balance, transparency and the application of the precautionary principle begins. In his view, the sustainable development of biotechnology is only possible if there is public trust.

“My goal is a strong European biotechnology, but also strong guarantees for people’s health, environmental protection and the protection of the public interest,” said Kristian Vigenin.
