Kristian Vigenin: I will work for fast and effective protection of citizens when their personal data is misused

The head of the Delegation of the Bulgarian Socialists in the EP was chosen as rapporteur for the S&D group on new legislation on additional rules for the protection of personal data

„I will work for the protection of our personal data with faster and more effective procedures.“ This was stated by the head of the Delegation of the Bulgarian Socialists in the EP Kristian Vigenin, who was chosen as rapporteur for the European socialists on new legislation on additional rules for the protection of personal data.

„The additional regulation will make it easier to receive and process complaints in cross-border cases, as well as the rights of the parties concerned, for example what information the complainant should have access to, and there will also be a more rational mechanism for cooperation between the investigating authorities“, Kristian Vigenin explained. He also gave an example of a case, a Bulgarian with a complaint about the use of his data on Facebook: „Options are being sought for how this person can obtain protection, despite the differences in the judicial system in Ireland, where Meta is based, and in Bulgaria.“

How complaints will be filed and resolved

„Anyone residing on the territory of Bulgaria can lodge a complaint with the Commission for Personal Data Protection if they believe their personal data is being misused, including by companies that are not based here. The Commission must inform its foreign partners and they must cooperate in the investigation“, the head of the Delegation of the Bulgarian Socialists in the European Parliament also said.

„Many complaints sink into administrative limbo and go unresolved for years, then appeals through the courts begin and in reality there is no change. Our aim is to reach a faster resolution of such cases and real protection for citizens’ violated rights“, the MEP also said.
