Kristian Vigenin: Food innovation is decisive for healthy eating and as a source of new economic opportunities

„Food innovation is decisive for tackling contemporary challenges such as food security, nutrition and climate change.“ This was said by the head of the Delegation of the Bulgarian Socialists in the European Parliament Kristian Vigenin in Brussels at the discussion „Innovation Talks, the future of proteins“, which he hosted.

As chair of the Working Group on Agriculture, Food and Consumers (AgriNutriCom) at SME Connect, he opened the event with a reflection on some of the most serious challenges facing our food system, from the growing world population and the demand for protein to the loss of biodiversity, land degradation and climate change.

The discussion brought together a wide range of participants, representatives of the European Commission, industry leaders, members of the European Parliament, non-governmental organisations and stakeholders, united by one common goal: shaping the future of food in Europe. Together they discussed encouraging investment in innovative production technologies and supporting healthy eating habits. Emphasis was placed on opening up new economic opportunities and restoring protein production within the EU, especially from oilseed crops. The participants in the discussion recognised that support is needed for sustainable practices, including reducing water use.

The discussion ended with agreement around the common goal of working towards a more sustainable, innovative and healthy food system in Europe.
