The socialists in the EP: EU enlargement is a promise of peace, stability and democracy
Vigenin discussed the future of relations between Bulgaria and North Macedonia with the deputy leader of SDSM Prof Anna Cupeska
EU enlargement is not a technical procedure, it is a promise of peace, stability and democracy. This is the message from the meeting in Croatia of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) in the EP, following the special discussion organised there on the European integration of the Western Balkans, in which Bulgarian MEP from the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament Kristian Vigenin took part.
Progressive leaders from the region sent a clear message: “The future of the Western Balkans is European!” Among the guests of the discussion were: Nermin Niksic, prime minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina and leader of the Social Democratic Party; Danijel Zivkovic, leader of the Democratic Party of Socialists in Montenegro; Srdjan Milivojevic, representative of the Social Democratic Party of Serbia; Ivan Vujovic, leader of the Social Democrats of Montenegro; Marinika Tepic, chair of the parliamentary group of the Party of Freedom and Justice, Serbia; Taulant Balla, chair of the parliamentary group of the Socialist Party of Albania, and Prof Anna Cupeska, deputy leader of the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM).
The main points of the discussion
The main highlights of the conversation were speeding up the accession negotiations and giving priority to reforms in justice, media independence and the fight against corruption. The leaders pointed out that a more active EU role is needed to preserve peace and security in the region. The need for a stronger commitment to the rule of law and the protection of democracy, and for support for economic and social development across the whole region, was highlighted.
Kristian Vigenin held a constructive conversation with Prof Anna Cupeska about the future of relations between Bulgaria and North Macedonia, as well as about the possibilities for renewing the political dialogue between BSP and SDSM.
The meetings with the parties from the Western Balkans will continue during the upcoming PES congress in Amsterdam, 16 to 18 October.
