Kristian Vigenin: The development of artificial intelligence requires clear rules that protect citizens' rights

Kristian Vigenin: The development of artificial intelligence requires clear rules that protect citizens' rights

The MEP called for the protection of personal data and rejected the claim that European rules hinder technological progress

„Citizens need stronger protection of their personal information, not new privileges for companies seeking unlimited access to it,“ said MEP Kristian Vigenin during a plenary debate in Strasbourg on „Strengthening the global governance of artificial intelligence“.

As rapporteur for the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats on the „Artificial Intelligence Omnibus“, Kristian Vigenin stressed that simplifying the rules must not turn into deregulation. The new rules must not be used as a means of circumventing the safeguards for the right to privacy and the protection of personal data. „We cannot allow those who profit from artificial intelligence to set the rules they operate by themselves.“

Regulation does not hinder the development of artificial intelligence

Polish MEP Arkadiusz Mularczyk used the „blue card“ procedure to ask Vigenin about Europe lagging behind the US and China and about the risk that strict regulation could hamper investment. In response, Vigenin said that regulation does not hinder the development of artificial intelligence. He gave the example of the US, where, in his view, the lack of regulation and the way data centres are being built are creating problems for the population and leading to a loss of public support. „Yes, we were not the first, and we are not number one at the moment, but we have created a very comprehensive and good regulatory framework. Now it is time to put it into practice,“ Vigenin said.

Europe must defend its legislation

The MEP stressed that Europe must defend its legislation and ensure its effective implementation. This also requires working together with its international partners to establish common standards. „The global governance of artificial intelligence must begin with respect for the rights of our own citizens. And on this issue, Europe cannot afford to back down.“

In conclusion, Vigenin expressed confidence that Europe will catch up: „And I can promise you that you will see Europe catch up, and the others will start following our example, not the other way round.“
