Kristian Vigenin: We need the cooperation of our institutions so that the European prosecutor's office can go all the way for "Chiren"
The vote of no confidence in the government is not substantiated and will not succeed
“There must be cooperation from our institutions in order for the European prosecutor’s office to go all the way for Chiren. This is what the head of the Delegation of Bulgarian Socialists in the European Parliament and member of the BSP’s Executive Board Kristian Vigenin told BNT in connection with the scandal with the Bulgarian representative in the European prosecutor’s office Teodora Georgieva. He noted that there are investigations for billions in every member state, but the cases that go to court are very few and the convictions are even fewer. “At the same time, the Chiren case is not an excuse for the other thing – that there are doubts about the specific way the delegated prosecutor from Bulgaria was appointed. Instead of gradually cleaning up our environment, we are polluting the European environment”, Kristian Vigenin commented. The MEP expressed satisfaction with the reaction of the European prosecutor’s office. “This type of action can compromise the entire European prosecution service. My question to Laura Kövesi in the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs was what she intends to do. She replied that she could not comment at this stage, but listed possible measures. Yesterday one of them came to light and this is an example of how one can react quickly and effectively”, he explained, adding that he hopes the whole truth will come out and is ready to cooperate so that there is transparency and justice.
The government’s stability and policy on Ukraine
Kristian Vigenin noted that he was not particularly worried about the stability of the government. What worries me is that we entered the government with the condition and understanding that there is a clear majority behind this government. When there is a clear majority, then you can anticipate and plan policy. When there is a floating majority, then you have no guarantee, from what you put in as a draft, what will come out in the end. There will be a government obviously. The question is – how effectively will it be able to work.” He thinks it is premature to predict what the MRF-DPS will do and whether it will withdraw its support. The BSP EB member is of the opinion that there is an expectation in the party to achieve concrete results from its participation in the government, but clarified that this requires time.
“The policy towards Ukraine is not the red line to bring down the government. Our participation in the government has made Bulgarian politics softer on this conflict,” Vigenin said on another topical issue. He assesses the prime minister’s position as much more moderate and reasonable: “It is true we are participating in the meeting of the so-called coalition of the willing, but it seems to me that we are not among the most willing and that is good. I would like to see a stronger commitment of the government and the prime minister in talking about how to achieve peace and less in how to support Ukraine more in the war.”
