Vigenin: Cooperation between scientists, politicians and patients can deliver solutions for people with primary immunodeficiencies

Vigenin: Cooperation between scientists, politicians and patients can deliver solutions for people with primary immunodeficiencies

“Dealing with viral threats, antibiotic resistance and guaranteed access to quality health care is possible through cooperation between scientists, politicians and patient communities. This is the way to find sustainable solutions.” This was stated by Bulgarian MEP from the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament Kristian Vigenin, who opened the round table of the international non-governmental organisation IPOPI (International Patient Organisation for Primary Immunodeficiencies) in Brussels. It was devoted to the topic “Viral threats and immune challenges: the future of respiratory care through the eyes of patients with primary immunodeficiencies”. The organisation brings together patient groups and works to improve the diagnosis, treatment and quality of life of people with primary immunodeficiencies.

The event brought together leading experts, representatives of European institutions, patients and organisations, in order to highlight the ways in which people with primary immunodeficiencies can be better protected.

Primary immunodeficiencies are a broad group of rare inherited diseases that compromise immune function. They lead to a shorter life expectancy, increased vulnerability to severe and recurring infections, and turn daily life into a constant challenge, both for patients and for their families.

Bulgaria records a significantly lower share of diagnosed cases compared with other European countries. This is mainly due to a serious lack of awareness and understanding of the subject.

“The main goal of today’s discussion is to lay the foundations of a White Paper that will serve as a road map for better respiratory care for the community of affected patients. We need to note the threats ahead for this vulnerable group of patients and to formulate guidelines for improving the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of respiratory infections. I believe this White Paper will be an important advocacy tool, both at European and at national level, to make sure that politicians, doctors and health systems commit to the needs of this community,” the MEP set out the priorities.

Vigenin pointed out that through legislative frameworks, funding for research and innovation, as well as support for cross-border health initiatives and the encouragement of good practices, the European institutions can guarantee that scientific progress leads to a real improvement in the health of patients across Europe.

“This conversation comes at a particularly important moment, because we are currently preparing key legislative initiatives related to healthcare and life sciences, as well as to access to innovative therapies, shortages of critical medicines and the development of new antimicrobials,” Kristian Vigenin commented.
