Vigenin to students: We must create an environment in which innovation turns into competitive business

The MEP was a guest at the celebration of the 145th anniversary of the University of Telecommunications and Post

“I am counting on us to discuss together what rules we need to make sure technology works in people’s interest, what solutions we use to support research and development at universities and, most importantly, how to make sure enterprising young people turn innovation into successful businesses in Bulgaria that can compete globally.” This was said by Kristian Vigenin, Bulgarian MEP from the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, to the students and guests at the celebration of the 145th anniversary of the University of Telecommunications and Post. Among those who came to mark the occasion was the President of Bulgaria, Iliana Iotova. The event was also attended by Minister of Tourism Ilin Dimitrov, ambassadors, members of parliament and representatives of the academic community.

The university’s development

In his address, Vigenin highlighted the work of the Rector, Prof. Dr Miglena Temelkova, and her team in developing the university and linking education more closely with technology, innovation and the real economy. “You captured the spirit of the times, of rapid technological change, and made sure your university is always one step ahead. As rector, you saw the school’s potential and turned it from a rough diamond into one of the brightest jewels in the crown of Bulgarian education,” Vigenin told Prof. Temelkova and her team.

The MEP invited students from the university to visit the European Parliament in Brussels to see first-hand the work of the European institutions and the decisions taken at European level on the issues that matter to them.

To mark the university’s 145th anniversary, Rector Prof. Dr Miglena Temelkova presented Kristian Vigenin with an anniversary plaque in recognition of his support for and involvement in the university’s development.
